Bombardier Lose £7.5 Billion Train Contract

Geoff Hoon, the Transport Secretary last week announced a £7.5 billion inter-city express train contract going to the Japanese manufacturer Hitachi rather than the Derby based manufacturer Bombardier. (more…)

UK Engineering Pushes Ahead

Six months ago an article in the FT written by Michael Kavanagh proclaimed “UK Engineering Pushes Ahead”, the article continued to portray a healthy outlook for the UK and the engineering sector by stating “So long as growing demand in emerging industrial economies offsets any possible slowdown or weakening of sales elsewhere, most can ride out the threat of a UK recession.” (more…)

Scottish Power!

Two recent initiatives announced and supported by Scottish Energy Minister Jim Mather and First Minister Alex Salmond, show just how the extreme weather conditions in Scotland are bringing power to the people. These two new initiatives concern a hydro electric scheme capable of powering up to 700 homes and the second relates to the wealth of natural resources in wind, wave and tidal power. Scotland claims to possess within these three natural resource sectors up to 25% of Europes renewable energy potential. Scotland is fast emerging as the powerhouse of marine renewables. (more…)

Small Firms Urged To Sign Up To Government Contracts

A recent release from Supply2.Gov.UK is urging small firms (SMEs) to sign up for the Governments Supply2.Gov.UK website to take advantage of the 1000’s of public sector contracts available. A call to action which has been heavily supported by the newly appointed Government Business Secretary Lord Mandelson who said “Every year the Government spends many billions of pounds on public sector contracts. It is vital that we actively help small and medium sized companies take advantage of these business opportunities. In the current economic climate this is more important than ever. SMEs often have smaller overheads, local knowledge and great flexibility. Often they can offer the public sector better value for money than big business.” (more…)
