Lord Young Backs Recruitment Agencies

The most fundamental right is to have a job but this must be balanced against fairness and the rights of workers, Lord Young, minister for postal affairs and employment relations at the department for business, innovation and skills (BIS), told the REC National Convention in London today.

He told the audience of around 200 delegates that the government recognised that many workers enjoy agency work, as it gives them the flexibility and an opportunity to re-enter the labour market: “I see recruitment agencies making a positive contribution to this.” (more…)

Underwater Cabinet Meeting Highlights the threat of Global Warming

In a novel way to highlight the threat of global warming, the Maldives president, vice president, cabinet secretary and 11 ministers staged a 30 minute underwater meeting on Saturday calling on all countries to cut their carbon dioxide emissions.

President Mohammed Nasheed and 13 other government officials donned scuba gear and took their seats at a table on the sea floor — 20 feet (6 meters) below the surface of a lagoon off Girifushi, an island usually used for military training. (more…)

Additional Funding for Scotland’s Renewable Energy Projects

Norway set to Supply British Consumers with Electricity

British consumers could soon be lighting their homes and watching television powered by hydroelectricity generated in the fjords of Norway, under plans announced yesterday by National Grid.

The operator of the UK’s network of high-voltage wires said that it was in talks with Statnett, the Norwegian energy company, about laying a £1 billion cable beneath the North Sea to connect the countries. The cable would be owned 50-50 by National Grid and Statnett and at more than 560 miles (900km), the high-voltage link from Kvilldal, Norway, to an unspecified point on the English coast would be the longest of its kind in the world. It would have a capacity of about 1,000 megawatts, about the output of the Dungeness nuclear power station, according to a National Grid official. The companies have carried out a feasibility study and are selecting an optimal route. (more…)

Speaking on the first day of the conference, Ed Miliband, the climate change secretary, called on all Labour councils to sign up to the 10:10 campaign and cut their carbon emissions by 10% by next year. (more…)

The Wind of Change is blowing into Geordie land

There was good news for the north east of England on Wednesday when energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband announced that the world’s largest wind turbine blades are to be made in the UK, after the government awarded a £4.4m grant to help finance plans for a new manufacturing project.

Miliband said that US-based offshore wind firm Clipper Windpower Marine Limited would receive the money to support its Britannia Project to build a prototype 70m blade for offshore wind turbines that will be bigger than the Blackpool tower and will weigh more than 30 tonnes. (more…)

Would you pay more for a home fitted with renewable energy?

A third of people would pay more for a home that had been fitted with a renewable energy source.

Research released last week by the Energy Saving Trust reveals that a third of Britons are happy to speculate to accumulate when it comes to house buying decisions.

Of those polled, a third (35%) said they would be willing to pay more for a home where some of their energy supply came from renewable resources such as wind, solar or hydropower. (more…)
