£250m investment programme to create 550 Scottish Water jobs

February 25th, 2013 by admin
A new water-improvement investment announced by Scottish Water will create 550 new jobs, eveningtimes.co.uk reports.
The £250 million project is designed to increase water quality of the River Clyde, address flood risks and strengthen Glasgow’s waste water network. The long-term aim is to mitigate sewer flooding, while tackling climate change and increased rainfall. Construction of the reinvigorated network will take two decades to complete.
It will incorporate the upgrading of 200 combined sewer overflows at the Clyde and its tributaries, the River Kelvin and the White Cart Water.
Five hundred new positions will be generated as a result, with 50 further apprenticeships on offer – a proposition which could be of interest to those seeking surveyor, water treatment, engineering or risk manager jobs north of the border.
The multi-million project has been supported by the Metropolitan Glasgow Strategic Drainage Partnership, a group which comprises Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, in addition to Scottish Water.
Commenting on the announcement, Scottish Water’s asset management director, Geoff Aitkenhead, told stv.tv: “We are delighted to be starting this massive investment in the Glasgow area’s waste water infrastructure which will transform the network and make it fit for the 21st century, help protect the natural environment and meet the needs of growth and development.”Author: Elizabeth Smythe
