Helen Burnham, HSQE Recruitment Consultant recounts recent events in the world of Resourcing Solutions.

Week One
The week gets off to a flying start with some new vacancies released to us by one of our biggest clients. They have finally received the go-ahead from the government for a £multi-billion transport contract in London, and that means that they need help with resourcing the project. The team are going to be extremely busy sourcing Health and Safety professionals with a solid background and experience in civil engineering.

My new married name is causing some confusion among candidates and clients, who are calling the office to ask where Helen Gotts has gone! Rest assured I am still at Resourcing Solutions, (albeit with a new name) and am about to celebrate my eighth year in safety recruitment.

Week Two
This week we hear that Resourcing Solutions has successfully passed a recertification of one of our critical standards. This recertification is something to celebrate at Resourcing Solutions, as this has provided us with a wider scope due to new and interesting protocols. This means that we are still one of the leading recruitment businesses in the UK to be authorised to sponsor and supply safety critical staff to the UK rail industry. Rail engineering is a core part of our business, and one that is always going to require safety experts due to the highly regulated and hazardous nature of the work.

Week Three
An exciting start to the week as some of our major UK clients announce that they are winning tenders for work elsewhere in the world. This means having to assist with the mobilisation of degree-educated SQE professionals who are interested in moving out of their comfort zone and join projects in places like Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. I wonder if this means that the rest of the world is starting to take occupational health and welfare as seriously as the UK does?

Week Four
It’s been a challenging week so far. The level of excellent candidates available is still outweighing the demand. Many of our clients tell us that they would happily recruit more safety professionals, but that they are restricted by budgetary complaints or a lack of new project awards. Also challenging is the number of candidates trying to reinvent themselves as safety practitioners (often when their skill sets lie elsewhere), or people with the NGC seeking their first role in safety. Currently, whilst clients are insistent on the highest possible qualifications with extensive experience, many entry-level candidates are finding it tough. We offer advice on CV presentation and interview technique, and advise these candidates to continue their CPD, whilst being alert to every possible opportunity to gain some work experience.

Week Five
Despite having worked in recruitment for quite some time, human behaviour never fails to surprise me. Although we coach candidates on interview performance and what to expect in this kind of situation, one gentleman uses his interview slot as the opportunity to offload all his gripes and grievances about his current employer, and even gave detailed explanations of some more sensitive issues in his personal life. Needless to say, the interviewer did not add this candidate to the shortlist for a second interview.

On a happier note, we receive an email with the details of the 2010 SHP Awards. I have attended every SHP award ceremony since the launch of this event, and always enjoy getting dressed up and meeting the people I deal with every day.

Week Six
The rewards of our efforts over the past few weeks are starting to come to fruition. We are booking interviews and receiving offers for a variety of roles both in the UK and internationally. Whilst a client will never feed back at the speed at which a candidate would like them to, we are certainly moving in the right direction.

There is something very satisfying about their next career move, and at the same time using our network to introduce our clients to new talent. Now, if only I could land a client visit to the Caribbean, rather than a portakabin in Croydon.

If you are a Health and Safety Professional looking for that next career move, then you can contact Helen on 0118 932 0100 or email hb@resourcing-solutions.com

2 entrepreneurial businessmen with a passion for the environment have joined forces to start a new renewable business in Cornwall.

Rupert Hanbury-Tenison & Robert Stirling are the creators of Moor Heat Ltd; a diverse business utilising the surrounding countryside and providing energy through a range of disciplines including biomass, PV, geothermal and hydro power.

Rupert has been involved in heath land management for 15 years after taking on part of the moor as an incorporation of his family farm. He is a director of ‘Branch Out Tree Maintenance’ that undertakes tree, moorland and river maintenance across the spectacular Bodmin Moors.

Their research into Moor Heat began when they started to look into the benefits of the South West Uplands to the public; Rupert went on to explain;

“To my mind, the moorlands have some important benefits to the public, and we need to capture these things which include carbon storage from the peat, which can be stored at a rate of approximately 80 tonnes per Hectare per year. If the peat is burned, it can be instantly released at up to 120 tonnes of carbon per hectare. The South West Uplands provide 95% of the drinking water for the South West and naturally filters through the moors. With landscape and historical value being so apparent in this area of the country, this makes Bodmin Moor an area of diverse focus & a key prospect for renewable energy”

Nature & climate has also contributed to some problems that the Moor faces including warmer winters and the hybridisation of alien European Gorse with the native Western Heath Gorse. This monoculture suppresses other native vegetation and grasses which in turn is causing rainfall to runoff into the rivers, causing erosion.

A more severe problem that Cornwall as a county are experiencing is the rapidly spreading deadly disease Phytopthora Ramorum (Sudden Oak Death) this disease, caused through infected Rhododendron could cause the decimation of thousands of hectares of commercial forest and native woodland.

This is the catalyst for the creation of Moor Heat and having researched the technology and the resources, Rupert & Robert have invested in specialist equipment to selectively remove up to 1 Hectare of Gorse & Rhododendron per day. This specialist farming process means that individual plants can be removed whilst protecting and retaining other species. The useable biomass is then taken to their on-farm plant where it is converted into a sustainable fuel source for the domestic & commercial market.

The machinery used to produce this fuel source runs on bio-oil and bio-diesel, making the end product carbon neutral. Moor Heat have been responsible in every way by consulting closely with Natural England by receiving written approval from them, the local community and have already been visited by 2 local MP’s.

With such a specialist approach to renewable energy, I asked whether they have had any obstacles to overcome, Rupert explained;

“The largest problem we are facing is the conversion of very wet feedstock (70%+) into a suitable feedstock to make into briquettes (10%). We are currently looking to utilise a disused tin mine for geothermal energy to dry the feedstock an also small scale CHP Production (up to 1MW) to both aid drying and to produce electricity to run machinery. We have a planning application with Cornwall Council for the installation of the drying equipment and briquetting plant.”

So what next for the dynamic environmental duo?

“We also have the infrastructure in place to house the operation and have planning permission to install a 20KW wind turbine to provide a sustainable power source. We have undertaken a considerable amount of research into PV and have identified a joint usage area to install 2 hectares of solar PV producing up to 500 KW/h per hectare.”

Rupert & Robert have really demonstrated the importance of supporting local initiatives whilst protecting our countryside, they have a scalable business plan and success with this is inevitable. We wish them every success in their business.

Corporate and Social Responsibility is critical to a company’s brand and often their positioning within the global economy. The essential need to reduce pollution continues to grab the headlines as we see Global Warming and Climate Change driving the behaviours of multinational corporations to change the way that they work and position themselves to be more compliant and responsible.

Sustainable Development is a critical factor in the requirements to meet human needs whilst preserving the environment. The most often-quoted definition of sustainable development is; “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This was voiced by the Brundtland Commission (formally the World Commission on Environment & Development) who was developed in 1983 by the United Nations.

As early as the 1970’s, Sustainability & Environmental Development was on the world’s agenda and continues to drive forward changes in how we live today.

As the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill continues to dominate the headlines across the world, it highlights the importance of corporate responsibility and compliance.

BP originally signed to the CSR Scheme which requires businesses to adhere to 10 principles regarding human rights, labour policy and environmental responsibility. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico appears to provide evidence that the company has not adhered to the principles and could undermine its credibility as a signatory to the compact. In light of this, the office of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) has asked BP to step up its ‘lagging’ commitment to the initiative in the wake of the Gulf Oil Spill.

Because of this continued focus, this has proven positive in the development of new opportunities within this business remit and Resourcing Solutions are currently working closely with a Global Client to find them exceptional candidates to work in this technical compliance environment:

The roles we are looking to resource currently are:

HSE Consultants at all levels

Whilst the Oil Industry continues to dominate the headlines for the recent disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the UK continues to remain confident in what the Oil and Gas Industry can do to help us out of financial deficit.

Oil and Gas UK’s economics director, Mike Tholen, said: “We are all aware of the challenges the Government faces in repairing the public finances. The best help our industry can give at this time is to keep on investing in producing oil and gas that will help maximise the Treasury’s earnings from tax revenues over the long term.

The UK currently relies on Oil & Gas to provide over 70% of its primary energy needs which is likely to continue well into 2020.

Oil and Gas in the UK is seen as a vital natural resource & even though Green Energy is being developed heavily here, Oil and Gas seems set to stay for the foreseeable future.

The Oil Industry in the UK began, following the discovery of oil deposits in the North Sea during the mid 20th Century. Due to the harbour and serving rigs offshore, Aberdeen has become known as the ‘Oil Capital of Europe’ which in turn has seen the number of jobs created in Aberdeen estimated at half a million. It continues to grow today with a large number of global petroleum businesses basing their head offices in this thriving UK Oil and Gas Hub.

Due to this continued growth, we are now assisting our clients in resourcing the following roles:

Principal Verification Engineer – SubSea

Principal Verification Engineer – Pipelines

Pipeline Engineer

Verification Engineer

SubSea Process Engineer

Offshore Inspection Engineer

Principal Auditor

Risk Based Inspection Engineer

Senior Vendor Inspection Engineer

We are looking for candidates with established experience of the local Oil and Gas Market who have relevant qualifications and a passion to succeed and develop both themselves and their business.

To learn more about these opportunities, please contact Jodie Cattermole today on 01189 320 100 or email jcattermole@resourcing-solutions.com

The Oil and Gas Industry is one of the most important industrial sectors to contribute to the economy of Brunei Darussalam and this industry continues to play a dominant role even in the present day where the country has attempted to diversify its economy through other industrial sectors.
