Wind Farm Study Concludes no Evidence of Harm to Humans

December 16th, 2009 by Barry Potier

A  press release made by the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) on a long awaited study made by the  joint American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) on Wind Turbine Sound and Health Effects has been published.

CanWEA’s press release comments on the findings: ‘An international panel of experts has released a report based on a review of a large body of scientific literature on sound and health effects, and specifically with regard to sound produced by wind turbines. After extensive review, analysis and discussion, the panel has concluded that sounds or vibrations emitted from wind turbines have no adverse effect on human health.’

The Executive Summary of Wind Turbine Sound and Health Effects states that the panel had ‘reached consensus on the following conclusions’:

1. There is no evidence that the audible or sub-audible sounds emitted by wind turbines have any direct adverse physiological effects.

2. The ground-borne vibrations from wind turbines are too weak to be detected by, or to affect, humans.

3. The sounds emitted by wind turbines are not unique. There is no reason to believe, based on the levels and frequencies of the sounds and the panel’s experience with sound exposures in occupational settings, that the sounds from wind turbines could plausibly have direct adverse health consequences.

If you have a view which contradicts the ‘expert’  findings please let us know and if you would like a copy of either the Executive Summary or the full report please contact us and we will send this to you.

  1. Heather Selin Says:

The British, American and Canadian wind industries conclude that wind energy is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Hm. A bit like the Pope defending the Catholic Church.
