EU website advertising 250,000 British jobs

Around 250,000 British jobs are being offered to foreigners on a European Union employment website, it has emerged.
Dailymail.co.uk reports that the proportion of British jobs advertised on the website is gigantic compared to other EU nations. In fact, almost half of the total jobs available are in the UK.
France, for example, is currently only advertising 14,000 positions, whilst at least seven countries are offering far less than that.
The figures highlight Britain’s keenness to welcome skilled immigrant workers into the country. According to the website, there is a particularly high demand for workers in the engineering and construction sectors.
Certainly, Britain’s need for more engineers has been far from a secret in recent years. European citizens on the lookout for design engineer jobs, electrical engineer jobs or something similar could do a lot worse than looking for opportunities in the UK.
The jobs board, hosted on ec.europa.eu, explains that demand for jobs in the engineering and construction sector is due to skyrocket even further over the next few years. It cites huge infrastructure projects such as HS2, Crossrail and the Thames Gateway regeneration amongst the reasons for this.
The website also states that Britain is lacking individuals with engineering skills “across many disciplines”.

Lack of female engineers is affecting industry, Shell boss claims

The boss of fuel company Shell UK has claimed that there is a lack of female representation in engineering in Britain, and it’s affecting the industry.
Ed Daniels, the father of three daughters himself, has said employers need to address the gender gap in engineering by promoting the career to young women, according to telegraph.co.uk. He said: “If you want more engineers, then not accessing half the population feels like a really bad idea.
“It’s not just about Shell, we need a partnership with other industrial companies to tap into the government and help them understand the problem.”
Just six per cent of the engineering workforce is female, with research from the Institute of Mechanical Engineering showing girls tend to lose interest in science around the ages of 11 to 13.
But it seems that to fill the vacancies of design engineer jobs and various others in the industry as a whole, attention needs to be drawn to the current situation.
Theiet.org reports that Business Secretary Vince Cable has highlighted the lack of women in the industry and pointed out the vast gap between other countries in Europe, with women making up 25 per cent of the engineering industry in Sweden.
Mr Daniels pointed out that gender stereotypes of engineers may be a reason why girls are put off at a young age of considering a career in the industry.

Prime minister David Cameron has claimed that more scientists and engineers need to be trained for the future recruitment needs of the construction industry.
Cameron made the comments to attendees at the recent Big Bang science and engineering fair in London, which was opened by business secretary Vince Cable and the minister for universities and science, David Willetts.
According to nce.co.uk, the PM said: “If we are going to succeed as a country, then we need to train more scientists and more engineers. You have got to get them while they are young.”
Thousands of school children, were in attendance at the free event – which took place at London’s Excel venue, according to bromleytimes.co.uk. Companies from sectors such as science, technology and engineering were promoting careers which could include design or project engineer jobs. Schools and other organisations were also showcasing at the event.
Cable also opened the four-day event saying: “Science and engineering are central to economic recovery and growth and so we need to ensure there is a good supply of talented people to meet future demand.”
There were also competitions at the event, where the schoolchildren could show off their construction skills, such as building robots.

Work is set to begin on upgrading the Great Western rail line between West Drayton and Maidenhead, constructionenquirer.com reports.
The improvement works, which have been awarded to Balfour Beatty Rail, are set to begin this summer and run until 2017. The scheme is set to involve detailed design, installation and commissioning of new, upgraded tracks, meaning there could be a brace of new design engineer jobs created in Berkshire and West London.
Developers will also be lowering certain tracks in order to provide sufficient clearance under bridges to accommodate the overhead lines of new electric trains. Whilst there, work will also be undertaken on improving electrical works and existing overhead lines.
Improvements to drainage have also been outlined, as have works to strengthen bridges on the route.
Responsibility for the design, development and delivery of these works will fall on National Rail. It will also overlook the improvements of 27 stations which run from Maidenhead to Abbey Wood and Shenfield.
Speaking to cnplus.co.uk of the operation, Network Rail’s Crossrail programme director Jorge Mendonca explained: “Network Rail is undertaking a major upgrade of the existing rail network for Crossrail, including a significant programme of track renewals as well as station improvements.
“Crossrail will transform public transport, making it quicker and easier for people to get to destinations across London and the South East.”

Sir James Dyson wants government to help promote engineering

January 15th, 2013 by admin
Sir James Dyson has called on the government to help boost the amount of Brits choosing to study engineering.
The famed inventor revealed he is worried about the declining number of engineering graduates in the UK and shared fears that there might not be a big enough supply of graduates to fill all the engineering jobs in Britain.
In an interview with radiotimes.com, he argued that too many graduates were either coming to the UK from abroad or leaving the country after getting qualified.
He said: “This year we will have a deficit of 60,000 engineering graduates. Who will develop our future technologies? The government must do more to attract the brightest and best into engineering and science so that we can compete internationally.”
Considering his past, Dyson might be particularly keen for Brits in design engineer jobs to continue Britain’s legacy of innovation. He suggested that 90 per cent of engineering graduates studying in the UK emigrate afterwards. Only three quarters go into engineering-based roles after graduating.
Responding to Dyson’s call to action, a spokesperson from the department of business, innovation and skills told bbc.co.uk it was investigating how to better support the engineering sector at “all levels”.
