How can we combat current skills shortages in science and engineering?

Despite forecasts of thousands of jobs being created in clean energy projects – particularly in the £50 billion offshore wind development programme in the UK – universities are reporting low numbers of students on relevant courses at the moment. And, the industry is having difficulty getting the message out to school leavers and to undergraduates that the prospects are so good in renewable energy. Engineering just doesn’t seem to rank highly with prospective college students.
