Britain needs more qualified engineers

Britain isn’t producing enough engineering graduates to satisfy the increasing demand for jobs in the sector, a new report has suggested.
Research conducted by EngineeringUK has indicated that roughly 87,000 graduate jobs are set to be created every year in Britain from now until 2020.
Yet, the country currently only produces around 46,000 engineering graduates per year, meaning thousands of mechanical engineer jobs or other types of roles in the sector could be left unfilled.
In an interview with timeshighereducation.co.uk, EngineeringUK CEO Paul Jackson claimed more had to be done to get people interested in this industry.
He said: “What the report makes clear is the need to lay the groundwork early. This means doubling the numbers of young people studying GCSE Physics as part of triple science, growing the numbers of students studying physics A level and providing robust and consistent careers information for young people.”
The report was unveiled at an event held at Number 11 Downing Street earlier this week. According to theengineer.co.uk, business minister Michael Fallon has reacted to its publication by agreeing that engineering is “fundamental” to the UK’s economic progress. He also said he would look into ways of improving the amount of Brits applying for jobs in the industry.
