The government’s HS2 commitment has given fresh optimism that local transport around the West Midlands area could be given an investment boost. With Birmingham one of the first stops on the High Speed network fuel has been added to the fire for the vision for the second city’s own rail investment plans. (more…)
As expected, the government announced that the much-debated High-speed rail line will go-ahead at a cost of £32bn. If the project runs smoothly, it is anticipated that the first phase (London – Birmingham) could be completed by 2026. (more…)

There has been much debate recently about the proposed 140 mile high-speed rail line. Whilst there are many advocates of creating the new environmentally friendly transport, there are also many opponents. Many do not want to see the destruction of stretches of rural England that will be necessary to construct the new line. (more…)

The rail industry should aim to cut CO2 emissions in half by 2050, the chief executive of ATOC said at the ‘Sustainable Transport: ‘greening the transport sector’ conference in London last week.
The industry bills itself as the greenest form of public transport but in order to live up to this reputation a series of measures need to be implemented, Mr Roberts said. The railways are currently the largest single user of electricity in the UK taking up about 1% of the total demand. Roberts talked about making the industry more energy efficient and as an example highlighted the need to reduce the amount of electricity lost in transmission. (more…)
