Lord Young Backs Recruitment Agencies

The most fundamental right is to have a job but this must be balanced against fairness and the rights of workers, Lord Young, minister for postal affairs and employment relations at the department for business, innovation and skills (BIS), told the REC National Convention in London today.

He told the audience of around 200 delegates that the government recognised that many workers enjoy agency work, as it gives them the flexibility and an opportunity to re-enter the labour market: “I see recruitment agencies making a positive contribution to this.” (more…)

Helen Gotts latest blog post articulates how Candidates can get the best from Recruitment Agencies and Consultants.

‘Whatever your opinion of recruitment consultants, there is no denying that in the current overcrowded and competitive job marketplace, it is well worth trying to build a relationship with an agency you can trust.

One of the inevitable things about a recession is that “cowboy” organisations with no loyal client or candidate base start to struggle. This leaves the playing field open to the well established and more reputable organisations that don’t suddenly need to reinvent themselves in a different sector. (more…)

£16 Billion Crossrail Project Begins

Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Rail Minister Lord Adonis and London Mayor Boris Johnson recently gathered at Canary Wharf, in London Docklands, as the first foundations for a new Crossrail station were laid.

Gordon Brown welcomed the start of the £16 billion cross-London rail scheme, saying: “Many people said it would never be built, but today we are celebrating a defining moment for London as Crossrail’s construction gets under way.” (more…)

Government and BWEA Fluff their lines over Renewables Budget

The £5 Billion boost to the Renewable Energy sector announced by Alistair Darling in yesterdays budget is a far cry from the funding we really need especially as the Government themselves are only funding £1 Billion. However the BWEA have fallen over themselves to welcome the package of measures announced and Adam Bruce has widely praised the Government quoting that up to 60,000 new jobs could be created as a result. Bombardier Lose £7.5 Billion Train Contract

Geoff Hoon, the Transport Secretary last week announced a £7.5 billion inter-city express train contract going to the Japanese manufacturer Hitachi rather than the Derby based manufacturer Bombardier. (more…)
