Luckily, the rail industry escaped the worst of the government cuts and projects such as Crossrail and electrification, which had seemed to be in jeopardy, will now go ahead. Skills academy for the Rail Industry announced

Learning and Skills Council to build National Skills Academy

The Learning and Skills Council has approved funding to build the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural Skills.

The body will pump £5 million into the development in Thurrock, Essex. The academy will bring colleges, private delivery partners and key employers in the industry together to improve skills and training for young people. (more…)

How can we combat current skills shortages in science and engineering?

Despite forecasts of thousands of jobs being created in clean energy projects – particularly in the £50 billion offshore wind development programme in the UK – universities are reporting low numbers of students on relevant courses at the moment. And, the industry is having difficulty getting the message out to school leavers and to undergraduates that the prospects are so good in renewable energy. Engineering just doesn’t seem to rank highly with prospective college students.
