Are the government’s carbon reduction targets too ambitious?

On Tuesday, Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary, confirmed that the government intends to cut carbon emissions by halve by 2025 and put us on course for a decrease of 60% by 2030. (more…)

Is the UK damaging its efforts to reduce carbon emissions?

A study by the Policy Exchange has revealed that the UK’s efforts to meet the European Union target of delivering 15% of all energy from renewable sources will actually damage efforts to cut carbon emissions. The think tank has urged the government to renegotiate the unnecessarily expensive targets. (more…)

Crown Estate offers bursaries to marine energy postgraduates

UK falls well short of its 2010 target for renewable energy

Figures from the Department for Energy and Climate Change and Ofgem show that the UK failed to reach its target of producing 10% of electricity from renewables last year. In fact, we fell well short of the 10% target and only managed to produce 6.5% from renewable sources. (more…)

The onshore – offshore wind power debate continues

The debate over the viability of wind power continues to rage. On the one hand we have the Carbon Trust claiming that offshore wind will account for 10% of the global market within 39 years, and on the other we have the John Muir Trust saying wind cannot be relied upon to provide a significant level of energy.
