Transmission and distribution jobs
Power transmission and distribution recruitment partner
National Grid circuits are the motorways of the electricity system in England and Wales, and they enable the bulk transfer of electrical energy from power plants to substations. A network of 7000 kilometres of overhead lines, 600 kilometres of underground conductors and some 300 substations link the power stations and allow large amounts of electricity to be transmitted around the country.
Electricity is taken from the National Grid transmission system and reduced to 132kV and lower voltages for distribution by the local electricity companies or Distribution Network Operators (DNO’s) like Western Power Distribution and UK Power Networks. Large industrial customers may be supplied direct from substations at 33kV. Supply is further reduced to 11kV for distribution to towns and villages. The voltage is finally reduced by transformers to 230 volts for use in homes, schools, shops and businesses.
